Xraise provides experiences, to students, educators, and the public, that make science familiar and accessible. Immersed with CHESS scientists themselves, Xraise facilitates hands-on minds-on activities that involve direct interaction with physics phenomena. Through professional development, camps, tours, after-school and weekend family activities, and media, we foster excitement while developing understanding and intuitions about physics.
Xraise knows that a successful outreach program must build on student’s curiosity about the natural world to stimulate inquiry. Pre-college science educators must provide students with opportunities to build upon the knowledge and skills needed to conduct scientific inquiry, but must also develop the attitudes and values required to be a successful scientist, such as creativity, curiosity and perseverance. Educators and first time program facilitators will find helpful hints, successful strategies and productive partnerships for conducting outreach generated by Xraise through years of experience in working with pre-college populations.
Tours of the Wilson Laboratory are available to school groups, interested professionals, and the public. Highlights include the Cornell Electron Storage Ring (CESR) control room, the synchrotron tunnel, CHESS ops, X-ray hutches, and the Energy Recovery Linac (ERL) prototype.
Check out Xraise’s social media to keep up with what’s going on. Our Facebook will show you what we’re up to, go to YouTube to see our how-to videos and event compilations, Twitter will show you what we’re trending on, and Pinterest will give you activity ideas and invite you into the conversation about science education.
