In-situ Organic Film Growth
PIs: George Malliaras (Cornell University)
             Randy Headrick (University of Vermont)

Experimental setup at the CHESS A2 station.
(a) Photograph of the custom built chamber and
(b) cartoon of working conditions.

Goal: in-situ studies of the early stages of the epitaxial growth of thin organic films on different substrates;

Techniques: specular and grazing-incidence diffraction, reflectometry;

Beamline optics: multilayers with different bandwidth.

Experimental setup at the CHESS A2 station.

Reflectivity curves from 1ML of pentacene on silicon
when the temperature is 70oC (10-6 Torr vacuum) and
30oC (atmospheric pressure).
The fitting results (green and red lines)
indicate that water is absorbed between the pentacene
layer and the underlying substrate.

GIXD of pentacene thin-films on silicon dioxide.
(a) Cartoon of scattering setup and
(b) results from a film containing both phases
of pentacene.
