Staff Scientist at CHESS

The Cornell High-Energy Synchrotron Source (CHESS) in Ithaca, New York, USA has an opening for a Staff Scientist (Research Associate) to develop novel x-ray techniques and apply them to materials studies in the physical and/or biophysical sciences, serve as an x-ray beamline scientist supporting visiting researchers of CHESS facilities, and actively contribute to development of the next-generation synchrotron light source technology. The successful candidate is expected to have demonstrated ability to carry out a personal research program and establish diverse scientific collaborations. Candidates must show a strong record of hands-on experience in building and maintaining x-ray based experimental instruments and for x-ray data collection and analysis. A Ph.D. in any area of physical sciences, and at least 2 years of post-PhD experimental experience is required. A solid publication record, fluency in the English language, and excellent communication skills are essential. Appointments are for three years and are renewable, subject to satisfactory performance and availability of funds.

Research Support Specialist I

Technically oriented person to support a wide variety of X-ray research programs at the Cornell University High Energy Synchrotron Source (CHESS). Involves designing, building, maintaining, and troubleshooting complex scientific equipment, and providing service and instruction to staff, scientists, and visitors to the facility.

Would you like like to work in a large, fast paced cutting edge research laboratory? Would you like to support research in a wide variety of ways, from training experimenters to high level design and hands on fabrication of complex scientific equipment?

A Bachelor’s degree in a scientific or technical field with at least two years related experience or an equivalent combination, is required. Should have demonstrated skills supporting scientific research in a laboratory setting. Also should have a passion for and be able to demonstrate the ability to design, build, test, troubleshoot and repair electronics including PLC’s, microcontrollers, analog and digital circuits, printed circuit boards, data acquisition systems and motion control. Excellent communication and people skills are necessary. Must be able to lift 50 lbs. and work occasional evenings, nights, weekends, and holidays.

Staff Scientist at MacCHESS

The Macromolecular Diffraction Facility of the Cornell High-Energy Synchrotron Source (MacCHESS) has an opening for a Staff Scientist (Research Associate) to pursue the development of novel techniques in x-ray scattering as applied to structural biology, and to support users at MacCHESS. There will also be opportunities to pursue projects in structural biology, using current crystallographic and SAXS methods. Research areas of particular interest include structure solution from multiple crystals, use of Laue diffraction, BioSAXS, microfluidics, and user interfaces for beamline operation. A Ph.D. in structural biology, biophysics, or a related field, and at least 3 years of experience beyond the degree in a relevant field is required. A solid publication record is essential, and experience working at a synchrotron facility is highly desirable. Excellent communication skills are a must, including fluency in the English language. Appointments are nominally for three years with the possibility for renewal, subject to mutual satisfaction and the availability of funds.
