Designing an Experiment

There are three sections which discuss aspects of CHESS that directly affect the design of an x-ray experiment. The first section presents the choice of x-ray source, either hard-bend magnet or wiggler, and we give the spectrum from each so that the photon flux into any experimental station might be calculated. Several flux benchmark measurements are given with the station summaries. The next section covers x-ray optics, which could be the most important consideration for optimizing the signal-to-noise for a particular experiment. That section provides data on the x-ray optical elements at CHESS, including monochromator crystals types and their acceptances in terms of angular (Darwin) widths and energy bandpass. We also summarize the availability and use of total reflection mirrors, which can be used as low-pass filters (harmonic rejection) as well as for focusing the incident x-ray beams.

This section summarizes the x-ray absorption edge energies (electron binding energies).  References are provided for more complete information.
