Highlights
An Energy Spectrometer for Diagnostic Use at CHESS

A single crystal pin diode spectrometer was built to provide a simple experimental setup for diagnostic use on CHESS beam lines. This spectrometer can be used to accurately determine the energy, the energy spread, and the angular divergence of monochromatic beams. The spectrometer can also determine the high energy cutoff of a total reflection mirror and the alignment of sagitally focused beams.

The instrument determines the energy of a monochromatic beam by measuring the difference in angle of two (or more) Bragg reflections off the spectrometer crystal. Shown in the photo, this simple instrument uses two gearboxes, with a common drive shaft, to maintain the q-2q relationship between the crystal and detector. A pin diode detector is used for its small size and simplicity of operation. The entire spectrometer can be mounted either horizontally or vertically on either the standard Klinger Rails or the Dovetail rails of the crystallography cameras.
