Visiting CHESS

It is very important that you allow enough time for the check-in process prior to your scheduled beam-time (2 hours for new users).  No extra time can be added to your scheduled beam time to make up for time lost due to the check-in-process, so please arrive early.

  • If you are bringing Hazardous Materials DO NOT bring them into the facility until you have met with the CHESS Operator and Safety Officer assigned to your proposal.

  • If you have not notified us of all Hazardous Materials and you arrive with a substance we consider hazardous it WILL NOT be allowed in the building.

  • When you arrive at Wilson Laboratory follow the signs from the parking lot to the CHESS Reception area located on the 2nd floor (200L) of Wilson Laboratory.

  • From here our CHESS Operator will check you in.

  • If you have a Hazardous Material, inform the CHESS Operator, so that they may contact the Safety Officer assigned, and begin the check-in procedure.

  • Your group will be provided with a parking permit which must be returned prior to your leaving.  Should your group not return the parking permit the User will be charged $100 for the permit.  It is unfortunate, but many times a parking permit is left in a rental car and thrown away.

  • Each member of the group will be processed and provided with a radiation badge.

  • Those group members who did not complete the On-line Safety tour/quiz will be asked to at this time.  TIP - Do it before you come to CHESS.

  • The group will be given a tour of the facility as well as Safety and Equipment training.

  • For macromolecular users a MacCHESS Operator has been assigned to assist you with the set-up, there will also be a staff scientist available or on-call to answer any questions.
