Satellite Waste
Before using or
creating a CHESS or LNS satellite waste area, read and understand
Chemical Waste Disposal Procedures (section #7) in The
Cornell Chemical Hygiene Plan. Be sure that all of the
following points are met while using a satellite waste area.
-
Stable Storage
Area: A satellite waste storage area may be setup on a
stable lower shelf, bench top, or in a clearly marked cabinet.
Chemical waste containers should never be stored on the floor.
-
Secondary
Containment: Secondary containment must be provided for
all satellite waste areas. Containment may include any of the
following: Polyethylene or fiberglass tub, 4 gallon plastic
bucket, clean plastic painters bucket, or any other chemically
resistive container. If possible, the volume of the secondary
containment should exceed the total volume of all of the waste
containers stored in it.
-
Labeling:
Be sure that a supply of Cornell Environmental Health and Safety
waste labels are available near the waste area. These are
manifold labels with carbons and must be written on with a
ball-point pen.
-
Starting a new
waste container: When starting a new waste container, make
sure that it is empty, rinsed, and does not contain any chemicals
that may react with the waste chemicals. Remove or deface the
old label on the container. Before starting to fill the new
waste container, make sure that a properly fitting cap is available.
Either, use the original cap, or test the lid with water to make
sure that it does not leak. The cap must remain tightly sealed
on the container except while adding to the waste container. a)
Location: The building and room number of the satellite area. b)
Name: Print your name clearly c)
Phone Number: Use the CHESS phone number (5-7163) or
the LEPP phone number (5-4882) as appropriate.
d) Date: Leave the
date blank until the bottle is full to shoulder. e)
Type: Check as many as appropriate, but remember not
to mix non compatible chemicals. f)
Chemical Name: Use the chemical name of
the waste. Do not use formulas.
-
Notifying EH&S:
When the container is filled to the shoulder (always leave
head space for possible expansion), complete the three part
waste label as follows: Fill in the date. Separate and
firmly attach the two part back to the container. Remove and
discard the carbon paper. Immediately sent the first sheet of
the label to Cornell's EH&S, 201 Palm Road by way of the Cornell
office mail. (Note: Only trained personnel are
permitted to move chemical waste from a satellite waste area).
