Pressurized & Vacuum Operations
Pressurized & Vacuum Operations
Laboratory Pressure Vessels
Gas Cylinder: All gas
cylinders must be handled with great care. Minimally, the
following items must be observed:
-
All gas cylinders must be secured at all times
including during transportation of cylinders.
-
The proper regulator must be selected for the gas
in use.
-
Appropriate person protective equipment must be
used when handling cylinders.
See "Safe
Handling of Gas Cylinders" for additional information.
Prior approval for purchase and use of all poison
inhalation hazards (toxic gases) is required at Cornell. An
SOP must be generated for the use of a poison inhalation hazard.
Special equipment may be needed for the use of a poison inhalation
hazard. A list of gases considered to be poison inhalation
hazards is attached. Other gases besides those listed are also
considered to be poison inhalation hazards.
Above information is from Cornell
EH&S Lab Safety pages.
Gas Alarms
Pressing a gas alarm button sounds the fire alarm
system and turns on the toxic vent system. This vent system
exhausts the air out of the CHESS experimental area to ensure that
the contaminated air is not recycled into the building. Gas
alarm buttons are located on the CHESS control panel and in the West
Flare. If you know of a leak of toxic or explosive gas, inform
a CHESS operator of the problem immediately. He or she will
activate the gas alarm. Leave the building.
