Chapter Thirteen - User Policies & Training

User Safety Training

CHESS users come from all over the world to pursue experimental study.  In order to ensure that every user receives comprehensive safety training and information before doing any work at CHESS, users are asked to complete the following mandatory training requirements:

  1. Online User Orientation and Safety Training Course
This course covers an Orientation to  the CHESS facility, General Laboratory Safety, and CHESS-specific Safety Procedures.  All members of experiment teams must complete the training and take the quiz which follows it, preferable before they arrive for scheduled beam time.  Users cannot be issued a radiation badge without having completed this online training.

  2. CHESS Facility Safety Tour
An on-site tour of CHESS facilities and experiment work areas acquaints users with the locations of exits, interlocks, fire extinguishers, eye wash stations and procedures for searching and securing hutches, operation of station control panels, and other details necessary for working efficiently and safely at CHESS.  This tour is required of all new users and must be renewed every two years by returning users.
