CHESS Users are issued a personal radiation badge before admittance to any experiment areas. In order to sign out a radiation safety badge, you must have completed this User Orientation and Safety Training, and received a facility safety tour within the last two years.

Radiation Badge Procedures
1. Place badge on an article of clothing that will not be removed while in the laboratory.
The badge must be worn prominently between the waist and neck.
2. Personal monitoring devices are to be worn only in the building. Badges are to be placed on the badge rack in the main Operations area when leaving the building.
3. Do not leave your radiation badge in the hutch during an
experiment - this may result in recording high exposure readings on the badge. If you do leave your badge in the hutch during an experiment, or if your badge is lost, report it to the CHESS Operator immediately and obtain a replacement.
4. Place an identifying mark on the front surface of the film badge you are issued, preferably your last name.
5. When your experiment is finished, you must check your radiation badge in with the Operator on duty before leaving the CHESS facility.

Posted Warnings:
On occasion, other areas of CHESS are blocked to all entry. These areas will be marked clearly. You are required to comply with all posted warnings and area restrictions. |
Radioactive Sources and Samples:
CHESS maintains a small supply of sealed radiation sources for calibration purposes. Sources must be signed out to you by a CHESS Operator or Senior Staff Member, and must be signed back in within 24 hours.
Any outside radiation sources must be approved by the CHESS and Laboratory of Nuclear Science Safety Committees as part of the initial experiment review process, and may require that you demonstrate proof of specialized training.
