Proper use of a fume hood will significantly reduce the risk of being exposed to hazardous chemicals.
The following good work practices should be observed while using fume hoods:
-
Make sure the hood is working using an airflow indicator.
-
Keep the sash as low as is practical - the sash is a safety shield.
-
Keep lab equipment elevated at least one inch off the work surface.
-
Keep the hood free from clutter - do not block baffle openings.
-
Work at least six inches into the hood.
-
Minimize rapid movements in front of the hood, and traffic in and out of the laboratory while you are working.
