Accidents involving electricity can cause burns, explosions, shocks, and even death. If you are not a qualified electrician you should not be servicing any electrical equipment.

To avoid injury when working around electrical machinery, follow these basic electrical guidelines:

  • Keep your work area clean and orderly.

  • Never work around a source of electricity when you, your surrounding, your clothing, or your tools are wet.

  • Remove all metal jewelry, rings, and watches before working on electrical equipment.

  • Inspect all tools before use for damaged housing and frayed or damaged power cords.

  • Use insulated hand tools and double insulated power tools.

  • Never remove the 3rd grounding prong from an electrical cord.

  • Use Ground Fault interrupters (GFI's) when working outside, near wet areas or when using extension cords in wet areas.

  • Obey proper lockout/tagout procedures to ensure the safety of everyone.

  • Always be aware of posted warning signs.

For electrical devices or equipment that use over 28 volts:

If any equipment you bring for build here at CHESS uses 28 volts or more, you must follow appropriate lockout/tagout procedures while working on it.  See the next section of the course for more information on lockout/tagout procedures, and consult with the CHESS Operator on duty for more specific instructions.
