This manual contains the standard operating procedures (SOPs) for safe handling, use and disposal of numerous strong chemicals that are used at the Cornell High Energy Synchrotron Source (CHESS). These SOPs are meant to provide a quick reference for the dangers of each chemical and personal protective equipment to be used while handling each chemical. First-aid and spill clean-up information is also reviewed.
Before working with any chemicals at CHESS, all staff, post doctoral employees, and students must meet the following training requirements. All personnel are required to have taken Chemical Safety for Laboratory Workers and Chemical Waste (Hazardous Waste/RCRA) Training. Both of these courses are offered by Cornell EH&S. They should also have taken any special departmental safety training for the particular chemical operation being used. Training should also include a review of the Cornell Chemical Hygiene Plan and the Material Safety Data Sheets (MSDSs) of each chemical used. All CHESS users from other institutions should be able to demonstrate previous safety training at their home institution. The understanding of the following SOPs does not replace the above listed training.
