Distribution

All chemicals must be stored in the CHESS Chemical Room at all times except for the following:
Industrial chemicals associated with the machine shop such as aerosol spray paints, lubricants, household cleaners and small containers of solvents, which may be stored in appropriate areas of the Machine shop.
Small amounts of the above, which may be stored in and around the Operations area and work areas.
Dark room chemicals such as film, fixers and developers, which may be stored in the appropriate areas of the CHESS Dark Room. **Note: fixers must be treated for silver recovery by being poured through the silver recovery filter in the dark room before they can be disposed of.
Compressed Gases will be stored in designated areas.

Large quantities (greater than one gallon) of industrial chemicals must be stored in flammable liquids cabinets in the shop area.

A maximum of 10 gallons of flammable or combustible liquids may be stored in the CHESS Chemical Room at any time. See the CHESS Chemical Safety Officer for classifications of those chemicals and allowable types and amounts.

All peroxide-forming chemicals must be disposed off if they have a shelf-life older than two years.

No permanent storage of User chemicals is allowed in the Chemical Room.

Do not store chemicals in the fume hood.

Work using chemicals, except for those mentioned in 1 through 4 above, must be performed in the Chemical Room and/or its fume hood, or in a Biological Clean-room.

Improperly labeled chemicals will be disposed of.
