Procurement
Since CHESS has limited space for the proper storage of hazardous chemicals, it is essential that all chemicals coming into CHESS are accounted for. Users and personnel are required to follow the proper procedure for procurement or importation of new chemicals that will be stored at CHESS.
All chemicals, both hazardous and non-hazardous, procured by CHESS personnel for use and storage at CHESS must be signed in to the Chemical Log in the Chemical Room. A copy of the appropriate MSDS and/or SOP for that chemical must also be filed. The Chemical Safety Officer should be notified any time you order hazardous chemicals.
Hazardous chemicals brought to CHESS by Users (or shipped to CHESS in anticipation of a scheduled experiment) must be reviewed and approved by the CHESS Safety Committee as part of a regular experiment proposal, and also must be accompanied by MSDS's to be kept on file at CHESS. All chemicals, whether hazardous or non-hazardous, and whether they are brought in by Users or CHESS personnel, must be signed in to the Chemical Log in the Chemical Room. Users are responsible for retrieving and/or properly disposing of any chemicals they bring into CHESS at the end of their experiment. Chemicals left behind by users will be disposed of.
Bringing unapproved hazardous chemicals to CHESS may result in
cancellation of beam-time. CHESS personnel who bring in
hazardous chemicals without alerting the Chemical Safety Officer put
other personnel in danger and compromise the Hazard Communication
Standard, which could jeopardize the operation of the CHESS
facility.
