The Cornell Laboratory for Accelerator-based ScienceS and Education (CLASSE) studies particle beams and accelerators, photon science, particle physics and the early universe, and serves students, the public and scientists from Cornell and around the world. The research missions of this laboratory are in many respects unique in the world.

What type of work will you do?
The Vacuum System Specialist serves the scientific mission by providing technical support to academic research personnel (students and scientists). This is a technical position that will interface directly with scientific staff to translate scientific needs into operating research instrumentation. This position will lend support to multiple research programs across the entire CLASSE complex, giving the incumbent the opportunity to gain exposure in several different technical fields.
Primary responsibilities of this position is to perform vacuum work in support of all research programs with general supervision/direction. This includes:
- Maintain, repair, install, and modify experimental equipment in support of all research operations. Monitor overall system performance to identify additional improvements
- Assist in the design and fabrication of precision components for new research projects and upgrades through consultation with staff, faculty, researchers and technicians.
- Assist in translating concepts into detailed engineering drawings. Perform analysis on proposed designs to identify potential problems and solutions.
- Identify the needs of continued operations regarding new systems and continued operations of existing systems in regards to critical spares.
- Assist in routine activities such as component bake-outs, leak-checking and pumping system maintenance.
- Occasional on-call support for operational emergencies during nights, weekends, and holidays.
What qualifications are important?
Associate’s degree in engineering, science or equivalent, or two to four years of relevant technical experience involving mechanical equipment. Experience in trouble-shooting equipment issues on mechanical or vacuum systems. Proficient use of standard hand/power tools, diagnostic equipment, machine shop and material handling equipment in support of research mission. Ability to respond quickly to occasional off-hour problems and emergencies by remote communication and/or returning to Campus.
What qualifications might give you an advantage?
Bachelor’s degree in engineering, science or equivalent. Advanced machine shop, fabrication and mechanical skills. Experience with experimental systems or building systems. Experience with ultra-high vacuum (UHV) components, leak checking, and vacuum design. Computer assisted design proficiency, and advanced skills for mechanical maintenance, installation and repair techniques.
