The 2019 Synchrotron Essentials Workshop will provide practical training and guidance for planning and conducting synchrotron-based measurements at CHESS beam lines. We will introduce workshop participants to important techniques and topics such as x-ray spectroscopy, high pressure biology, and imaging / characterization of structural materials as well as highlight essential elements of proposal writing and experiment planning.
The target audience for the workshop is graduate students and young investigators. There will be:
- An overview of various experimental methods that highlights what information these techniques can provide and what types of questions they can answer
- Teaching how to define projects and write successful proposals for beamtime at CHESS
- Demonstrations and hands-on activities covering skills such as collecting and analyzing data
This workshop is supported by a collaboration between INCREASE (Interdisciplinary Consortium for Research and Educational Access in Science and Engineering) and CHESS partnered with the UPR PREM (Partnerships for Research and Education in Materials).
INCREASE is an organization that promotes research and education at minority-serving institutions (MSIs), works to increase the utilization of national research, and facilitates education and research training, especially for members of groups underrepresented in science and engineering research, such as African-Americans, Hispanics, and women.
