Open House

Join us on Saturday, April 13th, 2024, from 10 am to 2 pm at Wilson Lab, 651 Campus Road, for an engaging and educational experience for all ages.

Event Details:

  • Date & Time: Saturday, April 13th, 2024, 10 am - 2 pm
  • Location: Wilson Lab, 651 Campus Road, Cornell University

Registration: (We are limited in space and resources, please register to make your visit go smoothly) 

REGISTRATION IS FULL Please check back for more tours throughout the year.

  • Free Admission: Registration is free but required. Secure your spot by registering for a designated entrance time before the event.
  • Designated Entrance Time: Every 30 minutes from 10 am to 1 pm. Please arrive during your registered entrance time.
  • Estimated Time for Visit: Please allow 60-90 minutes to walk through and enjoy the lab.

Parking Information:

  • General Parking: Visitors can park on Campus Road.  Please note, the synchrotron is 40’ below ground, and there are a lot of stairs with limited elevator availability. Please be prepared to walk up/down stairs and duck under undulators.
  • Accessible Parking: Available at 161 Synchrotron Drive, at the intersection of Pine Tree Road and Dryden Road.  This is a great option for people that are unable to walk stairs. But please note, parking and tour route is limited.

 

Tour Route: (Lots of stairs – or a slow elevator)

  1. Welcome (5th Floor Entrance of Wilson Lab):
    • Get a warm welcome and receive a map/info from science enthusiasts.
  2. CESR Ops (2nd Floor):
    • Explore the history and where it all begins.
    • Walk out onto the catwalk/experimental hall.
      1. The former location of the CLEO detector
  3. Highlight Tours:
    • Synchrotron/Accelerator Tunnel
    • CHESS Beamlines
      1. QM2
      2. FAST
      3. FMB
      4. SMB
      5. PIPOXS
      6. (please note, some beamlines may be unavailable)
    • CHESS Ops
    • Wilson West, HMF, XLEAP.
  4. Hands-On Science Demos (Sector 7):
    • Engage with interactive science demonstrations led by our experts.
  5. Exit (3rd Floor):
    • Conclude your journey on the 3rd floor, and then make your way to the 5th floor exit.

  • Interactive Science Demos: Experience hands-on demos covering a range of topics from static electricity to magnetic fields.
  • Behind-the-Scenes Tours: Take a peek into the inner workings of Wilson Synchrotron Laboratory, exploring key components and technologies.
  • Engaging Presentations: Learn about the cutting-edge research conducted at CHESS and CLASSE and their impact on various scientific fields.

Plan for the Day:

  • 10 am - 2 pm: Explore the tour route, participate in hands-on demos, and engage with our knowledgeable staff.
  • Registration Required: Ensure you register for a designated entrance time to make the most of your visit.
  • Parking: General parking available on Campus Road, with accessible parking at 161 Synchrotron Drive.
