With enhanced capabilities of existing beamlines (blue), and construction of new beamlines (green), CHESS will be the premier synchrotron source in the U.S. for high energy, high flux studies.
The improvements of CHESS-U will be achieved by reconfiguring the magnet structure of one-sixth of the CESR storage ring, while upgrading and expanding 12 independently operated insertion devices for hard x-ray beamlines.
Operating with a single beam instead of with counter-rotating electron and positron beams will eliminate many of the performance limitations associated with the present 2-beam operation as well as enable all beam lines to be aligned to a single beam orbit.
Construction is expected to be completed in 2018.
