The Cornell Laboratory for Accelerator-based ScienceS and Education (CLASSE) studies particle beams and accelerators, photon science, particle physics, and the early universe, and serves students, the public, and scientists from Cornell and around the world. The research missions of this laboratory are in many respects unique in the world.
We are seeking two Equipment Technician II individuals to serve our scientific mission by providing technical support to academic research personnel (students and scientists). These are technical positions that will interface directly with scientific staff to translate scientific needs into operating research instrumentation. The positions will lend support to multiple research programs across the entire CLASSE research complex. The primary responsibilities of the positions are to perform mechanical work in support of all research programs with general supervision/direction. This includes:
- Perform day-to-day equipment handling activities in a large accelerator research facility; support 24-hour-7-day operation through scheduled and emergency work.
- Move/assemble/disassemble research-related supplies, equipment, and research devices across all CLASSE research complexes.
- Participate in the assembly, repair, replacement, and maintenance of complex laboratory research equipment.
- Fabricate and/or procure minor components for new research projects and upgrades.
- Assist other technicians, research specialists, scientists, and faculty as needed.
- Operate forklifts and other large vehicles.
These are initial one-year term positions with the possibility of renewal depending on continued funding, available work, and successful performance. Opportunities to advance in other technical specializations (such as vacuum systems, mechanical systems, or machine operations) may also become available during the term position. The starting salary is $19.50/hour or higher depending on experience.
What we need:
- A high school diploma and 2 years relevant experience in experimental equipment handling and basic mechanical skills or equivalent combination.
- Valid NYS Driver’s License.
- Must be able to lift at least 50 lbs. and be able to work in confined, awkward spaces, heights, and outdoors under all weather conditions.
- This is a safety-sensitive position requiring a DOT physical in accordance with Cornell University’s policy.
What we would prefer:
- Advanced machine shop, fabrication, and mechanical skills,
- experience in equipment operation such as: fork trucks, tractors, large trucks, mobile cranes, or skid-steers.
