Programmer Analyst III
CHESS is seeking to hire an individual with training and expertise in scientific programming and an interest in applying those skills as a Programmer Analyst III to the dynamic realm of user-driven research at CHESS.
Primary responsibilities for this position include, but are not limited to:
• Passion for contributing to an environment that builds individual and organizational effectiveness.
• Collaboratively develop, debug, and maintain software programs and infrastructure for collecting and managing x-ray data obtained at CHESS, including incorporation of machine learning and other AI-based approaches.
• Conduct and facilitate the transition of scientific scripts and workflows into production-level code for the CHESS user community.
• Demonstrate and promote best practices, such as revision control, for large and small software projects relating to conducting experiments.
• Assist in the deployment and training of software packages for CHESS staff members and users.
• Assist in planning for software needs for experiments & projects proposed by the user community.
• Build and maintain collaborative relationships with staff and teams.
• Contribute to the culture and practice of laboratory safety.
Required qualifications: Bachelor’s degree in scientific or technical field (physical sciences, computer science or engineering preferred) and at least two years of work experience or post-graduate education in software development is required. Passion for contributing to an environment that builds individual and organizational effectiveness. Good communication and independent learning skills. Must be able to work occasional evenings, nights, weekends, and holidays. Experience and familiarity with Linux-based systems required. Demonstrated fluency in at least one programming language such as C++ or Python required. Capable of adapting to the changing needs of a research environment. Able to receive directions and to communicate effectively across all research groups within the department. Work effectively and cooperatively within a team environment.
Preferred qualifications: Experience developing production-level code, ideally with Python programming language, revision-control (preferably git), and experience maintaining code and libraries in a Linux environment. Experience and understanding of quantitative data analysis. Experience in the physical sciences such as physics, chemistry or biology.
