The Cornell High Energy Synchrotron Source (CHESS) at Cornell University offers a special internship program for students at New York State community colleges to prepare for technical careers or continue into bachelors programs and achieve their educational goals. CHESS offers an eight week program specifically for community college students to apply their talents and contribute to the completion of our new facilities’ upgrade. While participants in the Summer Engineering and Research for Community College Students (SERCCS) program can look forward to many group activities including technical communication workshops, special science talks and social events, the center of their experience with be projects devised and supervised by personal staff mentors.
This summer’s project offerings include redesign of the facility's shutters for high speed and high heat load operation, data processing for high throughput protein crystallography, instrument development for the exploration of the putative origins of life on earth at high pressures and helping CHESS achieve ultra high resolution spectroscopy through high precision thermal control. Candidates with interest in the program are encouraged to find details at https://www.classe.cornell.edu/StudentOpportunities/SrccsProgram.html in time for the February 15, 2019 application deadline.
